AFTERSCHOOL SPORTS IN BRIEF

At the ISHB Primary we offer after school sports clubs throughout the year, for children from EY2 to YR6  Our Junior Primary also has the option to take part in Playball – an independent club where skills related to ball games and overall perceptual development are developed.
During the summer terms we offer cricket, basketball, swimming, athletics and tennis.  Children in the Junior Primary also have a club called Summer/Winter Sport, which gives us the opportunity for development of ball skills and target skills related to ball and target games.
In the winter terms soccer, hockey, netball, cross country and rugby is on offer.  Rugby has been the latest addition to the programme and is currently only on offer to the U8 and U9 age groups.

SUMMER SPORTS - TERM 1 & 4

Tennis

COACHES: Kobus Stofberg; Patrick Acheson
We offer tennis to children in both Senior and Junior Primary.  Mini-Tennis is offered once a week and takes place on our Primary School premises.  Senior Primary tennis slots take place twice a week, one session for Yr3&4 and the other for Yr5&6 at the Dominican Grimley School in Valley Road, Hout Bay. The school bus transports children to the practice sessions every afternoon.
Currently we do not have any match fixtures against other schools and tennis is more of a developmental and social club – giving all the chance to enjoy the sport.

Basketball

COACH: Kobus Stofberg
Basketball has proven to be a very popular sport, with drones of children signing up for it since its introduction in 2010. This group has also been split into two sessions, YR3&4 and YR5&5, in order to decrease the group size and make the groups more age appropriate.
The Inter-House Basketball tournament during Term 4 is always a big event on the school calendar. We occasionally play fixtures against the other international schools in the area, but for the most part it is a social club which everyone enjoys.

Swimming

COACH: Rhona Sehested-Larsen
Swimming takes place on Friday afternoons after school.  Due to our school not having a pool, this club takes place at the Dominican Grimley School in Valley Road.  There has been a big group of swimmers this year and some children even do squad training with private coaches in their own time.  Every year we have an Inter-House Swimming Gala in the first term for all our swimmers.  We have recently been invited to our first swimming gala – something we will be looking forward to.
Children in the Junior Primary have the option to sign up for our swimming lessons in our schools heated indoor pool.  These lessons are done by Simply Swimming, an independent swimming school based at our school.

Cricket

COACH: Kobus Stofberg; All Rounder Cricket Academy; Janine Bearne
Cricket has gone from strength to strength at the school with some great results in our match fixtures.  We have 2 Senior Primary teams – U10 and U11, both of which play in the Western Province Cricket Schools League with regular fixtures against other schools in the Cape Town area.  During Term 1 in 2011 our cricket teams were unbeaten and we hope to carry on with this success in the 4th term. Children in the Junior Primary play Mini-Cricket, with an occasional fixture against some of the other International Schools.

Athletics

COACH: Kobus Stofberg and support staff
Athletics does not take part as a weekly club, but instead forms part of Physical Education in the 1st term.  During this term we generally have 2 athletics meets, our Inter-House Athletics and our Inter-IES Athletics.  During these meets we have traditional events such as Sprints, Relay events, Shot-Put and Long Jump, along with fun events such as tug-of-war.

WINTER SPORTS - TERM 2 & 3

Soccer

COACH: Kobus Stofberg; Patrick Acheson
Soccer is the obvious favourite amongst the boys and we even have a couple of girls playing the sport.  Soccer is played during the winter terms, the 2nd and 3rd, with weekly fixtures as set out by the City Bowl and Atlantic Sea Board league.  In 2011 we had 4 teams playing in 3 different age groups – two U9 teams, U11 and U12. Fixtures are played against schools in the city bowl and of course all our surrounding schools.
This year we were lucky enough to be invited to two different 7-a-side tournaments where our teams did very well.
Soccer in the Junior Primary is very popular and the children have two clubs a week where they work on basic skills and regularly play matches against each other.

Netball

COACH: Elize Kruger; Janine Bearne; Ingrid Philips
Our netball has come a long way from being a social playing club to its current competitive format, with weekly match fixtures against surrounding schools and schools from the Fish Hoek/Kommetjie area.  We currently have 2 teams, U10 and U12 in this league.  This girls sport has become very popular and our teams have done fairly well this year.  The girls all love the game and participate with great enthusiasm.
Children in the Junior Primary also have netball as a club, where they learn the very basics rules and skills involved in the sport.

Hockey

COACH: Laura Casserly; Kobus Stofberg
We offer hockey to boys and girls during the winter terms.  For the first time our hockey teams also had some match fixtures this year.  Our U10 girls team competed against some of the Southern Suburb schools as part of the hockey league and had some great results.  Unfortunately the boys league matches clash with soccer matches, so they have not been able to play this year.
In the Junior Primary children also have the opportunity to get familiar with the sport during an afterschool hockey club and during a club called “Winter Sport”.

Cross Country

Cross Country races take place on Friday afternoons at various venues in the Southern Suburbs of Cape Town.  These big weekly events are very well organised and a good group of children take part.  This year we had the most children we’ve ever had represent the school and they achieved some great results.

Rugby

COACH: Kobus Stofberg
Rugby is the latest addition to the afterschool sports program and is only on offer for U8 and U9 boys.  Thus far it has been a club where children have learnt the basics of the sport and have been “toughened up” for the game through mini-matches played.
Due to the nature of our facilities this sport will stay available for the younger group only, but we hope to one day have rugby as one of the major sports in the school.
